S’Arenella: the origin of a name
S’Arenella, an Island Suspended in Time
Just off the coast of Cadaqués, close to the beach that shares its name, the island of S’Arenella rises from the sea like a small extension of rock, wind and light. Its discreet silhouette forms part of the bay’s landscape and of the unmistakable geography that makes Cadaqués one of the most distinctive places on the Costa Brava, in Catalonia.
Separated from the mainland by a narrow stretch of water, S’Arenella seems to exist in a time of its own. Its rocks, Mediterranean vegetation and the house standing on the islet create a peaceful scene, open to the sea and the Tramuntana wind. Seen from the shore, the island feels both near and distant: a small refuge surrounded by water, silent and mysterious.
Its beauty is neither imposing nor exuberant. It is a quiet beauty, shaped by pale stone, pine shadows, shifting reflections and blue horizons. In the morning, the light awakens it; at sunset, the sun turns it into a golden figure upon the Mediterranean.
S’Arenella is one of those presences that give the landscape of Cadaqués its unmistakable character. A small island, yet full of strength, preserving the intimate, seafaring and untamed spirit of this corner of Catalonia. To contemplate it is to understand, if only for a moment, why the Costa Brava has inspired so many travellers, artists and dreamers.
