Norai: the origin of a name
Norai, a Name Anchored to the Sea
In the bay of Cadaqués, where the white village meets the deep blue of the Mediterranean, the norais remain like ancient guardians of stone. For generations, they were used to moor vessels arriving from the sea, at a time when coastal trading ships connected Cadaqués with other ports and village life followed the rhythm of the wind, the tides and navigation.
Four of these historic structures still form part of the landscape: Norai des Podritxó, Norai des Pianc, Norai d’en Tits and Es Piló, the largest of them, standing offshore upon the reefs of the bay. Each occupies its place as a silent reminder of an age when arriving, departing or returning always meant crossing the sea.
Built of stone and exposed to the Tramuntana wind, the norais have withstood the passing of time, countless storms and the transformation of the coastline. Their beauty lies precisely in their simplicity: austere forms, shaped by water and salt, preserving the maritime memory of Cadaqués.
