Es Cucurucuc: the origin of a name
Es Cucurucuc, a Silhouette Facing the Sea
At the entrance to the bay of Cadaqués, close to the island of S’Arenella, a small rock rises from the Mediterranean. Es Cucurucuc appears on the horizon with its unmistakable shape, like a dark and solitary figure watching the boats pass, the light change and the sea remain in constant motion.
Its name, as distinctive as its outline, belongs to the intimate language of the Cadaqués landscape. Seen from the shore, Es Cucurucuc may appear small, yet its presence transforms the bay. At times, it stands sharply against the blue; at others, the mist, the wind or the sunlight turns it into an almost imaginary shadow.
The Tramuntana wind and the waves have shaped its stone over the centuries. With no trees, no paths and no company other than the sea, the islet preserves the austere, mineral beauty of Cap de Creus.
